Gonzalez for Franklin-McKinley School Board 2024

Gonzalez for Franklin-McKinley School Board 2024

An Overview of Decisions & Financial Allocations From Current Board

(Highlighting Key Issues)

  • Flawed Funding Priorities

$50,000 allocated for Nintendo Game Boy switches in after-school programs. This has sparked debate about whether funds should be redirected towards essential educational resources like books.

$250,000 invested in a distance-learning math tutoring program from a company with only two years of experience, lacking established effectiveness measures.

Significant funds are being invested in programs teaching gender roles to both biological and non-biological girls. Some argue that these topics should be addressed by families and community groups instead of using district funds to promote different lifestyles.

  • Teacher Compensation

A 0% pay raise approved for teachers over the next three years, despite nearly a 4% annual increase in the cost of living in Santa Clara County. In contrast, the Superintendent and Cabinet members are set to receive a 5% salary increase next year.

We value our hard working teachers! We know it is very challenging to elevate struggling students back to grade level. Teachers and struggling students need more support.

  • Academic Performance Decline

Decline in test scores over the past decade:

Science: 80% of students not meeting grade level.

Math: 73% of students not meeting grade level.

Reading and Writing: 65% of students not meeting grade level.

Instead of freely sharing this information with parents, the district tried to censure Trustee Cooper for publicly sharing FMSD test scores at a public event, following parent requests for greater transparency.

  • Property Tax Proposal

A proposed $191 annual property tax increase will appear on the November 2024 ballot. Despite the highest-ever per-student expenditure of $19,652 (California average: $17,281), yet student performance has not improved.

  • Excessive Mandatory LGBTQ+ Observances

The board requires all students, starting at Transitional Kindergarten (4 years old), to participate in various LGBTQIA+ events throughout the year, including Pride Month and National Coming Out Day, without parental consent.

An additional month of LGBTQ+ history and heritage education has been added in September/October, overlapping with National Hispanic Heritage Month and Filipino Heritage Month, which is important to nearly 60% of the community.

  • Considerations for School Closures and Property Investments

A survey is being conducted to assess potential school closures.

Over the past 30 years, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on surveys and land testing for a new school site on Communication Hill. FMSD still lacks a Letter of Intent from landowners despite a consistent decline in student enrollment over the last 14 years.

Based on available data & statistics, it is evident that current board members, running for re-election, have not effectively addressed the decline in academic performance and test scores. Their track record suggests they are not suited for re-election.

  • George Sanchez has served on the Franklin-McKinley School District (FMSD) Board for 31 years. It is time for real change.

  • Milan Balinton, who lost the general election in 2022, was appointed to the board later that year to fill a vacancy. We need parents to represent our district.
